What is Dangerous Goods?

Dangerous Goods are substances that may harm humans, animals, environment and property. Its physical state either in solid, liquid and gas is chemically structured that it is unstable and highly reactive

Dangerous Goods is a danger to people because when exposed without protection, it may cause the following including Toxic effects at inhalation, Toxic and Corrosive effects at skin exposure and Eye damage at exposure.

Dangerous Goods is a danger to the environment when it is released in quantities above acceptable levels from fire or spillage into the air, land or water. In addition Dangerous Goods is a danger to the property because:-

• Dangerous goods can result in major fire losses.
• Failure to manage risks associated with Dangerous Goods would increase
• Accidents due to improper handling of Dangerous Goods would affect Corporate Image.

Categories of Dangerous Goods

Dangerous Goods Warehouse has to be regulated by Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) under Occupational Safety Health Act 1994 as well as Department of Environment.

Dangerous Goods Certified Warehouse

Dangerous Goods cannot be stored in any warehouse. The designated warehouse has to be certified by Fire Department, Department of Environment as well as Local Authority.

When selecting a warehouse for the storage of Dangerous Goods, the checklist should be used in the vetting process. The basic compliance include Local Authority Business Licence, Fire Certificate, Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) or better known as Certificate of Fitness (CF)

proper Dangerous Goods warehouse facility should provide past hazard identification and Chemical Safety Data Sheets (CSDS) classification and labeling and a chemical register of the chemicals it stores.

A proper storage of chemicals can contribute to the safety and health of employees and also the environment. Among the key points to take note include:

• Emergencies: covering points such as emergency response plan and it components and general principles of emergency procedures. Others include fire fighting procedures and clean-up operation.

• Air Conditioned chamber with temperature of 16oC (depends on type Dangerous Goods stored).
